How to Get More Google Reviews Without Breaking Google's Rules (2026)

Person using a laptop and phone, representing a customer leaving a google review for a local business

Most happy customers never leave a review. They paid, they smiled, they left, and they meant to write something nice. Meanwhile the one person who had a bad day writes three paragraphs. If you run a shop, clinic or institute, you know exactly how that feels.

Reviews matter because they are often the first thing a customer reads before calling you, and Google treats them as one sign of how well known and trusted a business is. The good news is that you do not need tricks. You need a simple, fair habit of asking, and you need to stay clear of a few things Google now treats as fake engagement.

Facts checked on 8 November 2026 against Google’s own policy and help pages, linked below. Google updates these rules, so check the source pages if you are reading this later.

The Short Answer

  • Ask every customer, not only the happy ones, in a friendly way and at the right moment.
  • Make it one tap: share your Google review link or QR code on WhatsApp, receipts and in your shop.
  • Never pay or reward people for reviews, and never ask staff to hit review targets.
  • Reply to reviews, good and bad, calmly and briefly.

What Google Does Not Allow

Google’s Maps contributed content policy lists what it calls fake engagement. For business owners, the rules that matter most are:

Not allowedWhat it looks like in real life
Incentives for reviewsDiscounts, free services, gifts or cash in exchange for a review
Discouraging negative reviewsAsking unhappy customers not to post, or only asking customers you know are happy
Pressure on the premisesRequiring or pressuring customers to leave a rating while they are still at your counter
Staff quotas or scriptsAsking employees to collect a set number of reviews, or reviews that mention specific words
Conflict of interestReviews from current or former employees, or reviewing your own business

Google says breaking these rules can lead to anything from losing account privileges to account termination. It is not worth it. A handful of genuine reviews will always do more for you than a pile that disappears.

How to Ask for Reviews the Right Way

1. Get Your Review Link or QR Code

Google lets you create a review link or QR code from your Business Profile. Sign in on a computer (Google says QR codes can only be generated in a browser for now), open Read reviews, choose the option to get more reviews, then copy the link or download the QR code.

2. Share It Where Customers Already Are

Google suggests receipts, thank-you emails, the end of a chat, review requests on WhatsApp or Facebook, and a printed QR code in your store. For most local businesses in Dehradun, WhatsApp is the easiest: one short message after the job is done.

A message we would suggest, written in your own words:

“Thank you for visiting us today. If you have a minute, we would really value your honest feedback on Google. It helps other people find us: [your review link]”

Notice what it does not say: no discount, no “only if you liked it”, no pressure.

3. Ask Everyone, at the Right Moment

The best time to ask is right after the customer feels the result: the repair works, the treatment helped, the order arrived. Send the same request to every customer. Asking only the ones who smiled is exactly the selective soliciting Google’s policy rules out.

4. Reply to Every Review

Google’s review management page notes that helpful replies show customers you are responsive, and that approved replies appear publicly under the review. Thank people by name for good reviews. For bad ones, stay calm, apologise where you got it wrong, and offer to fix it offline. Future customers read your reply as much as the complaint.

What About Rules in India?

India also has a standard for online reviews. The Bureau of Indian Standards notified IS 19000:2022, “Online Consumer Reviews: Principles and Requirements for their Collection, Moderation and Publication”, on 23 November 2022. PIB described it as voluntary when launched, and it mainly sets out how platforms and businesses that publish reviews should collect and moderate them.

We could not confirm whether any part of it has since become mandatory. If you publish reviews on your own website, ask your adviser.

The spirit is the same as Google’s: reviews should come from real customers, and incentives or manipulation should not distort them.

A Simple Weekly Review Routine

  1. Save your Google review link and QR code once.
  2. Print the QR code near your counter or billing desk.
  3. Send the review message on WhatsApp after every completed job or visit.
  4. Set 15 minutes each week to reply to new reviews.
  5. Note any complaint that repeats, and fix the cause, not just the reply.

Reviews work best alongside a complete, active profile. If you want help with both, our Google Business Profile management plans include review replies and a QR code with your review link.
